Seems like nothing brings out the worst in some Texas drivers like the Holidays so December is a perfect time to review a few Safe Driving tips. While our workers apply their expertise in the field on heavy drilling equipment and large tools, they spend HOURS driving all over the wide-open highways of the Central Texas getting from site to site. So defensive/safe driving is drilled (no pun intended) daily at Blakely Construction.
Instead of reviewing specific driving skills/tips we will look primarily from the angle of technology, and when to smartly use/not use it as it relates to driving.
First, consider using a dedicated GPS device for navigation instead of your phone, as it can be less distracting and less tempting to text or otherwise. Our Blakely fleet uses this strategy and the navigation devices available today are fantastic! Also, driving apps such as Life Safer, AT&T Drive Mode, etc, are created to minimize distracted driving by blocking certain notifications, sending parental alerts, location sharing, and safe mileage trackers. Here is a link which reviews several suggested apps: https://www.dmv.org/distracted-driving-apps.php Prior to driving anywhere program your route first to avoid the distraction while in transit, and consider making any necessary texts/calls before you ever move your vehicle. One option most of us don’t consider is to simply pull over and take the call or answer the messages. Easy! Just because our phones/devices make things convenient doesn’t mean timing is always right! And because sometimes the most simple answer is the best one, we will even recommend leaving your phone tucked away in the glove box, or in a purse so it cannot be seen nor heard. Sounds extreme perhaps but try it, you may even enjoy the silence and be safer at the same time!
We hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday season, from our Blakely Family to yours!
